Sara Levine

Sara Levine is the Pro Bono Director at Bet Tzedek. She oversees the agency’s pro bono collaborations with law firms, legal departments, corporations, law schools, and universities. Sara builds and maintains pro bono partnerships, develops new opportunities and strategies, and leads recruitment efforts. She works with and mentors a team of attorneys, non-attorneys, fellows, law students, and pro bono volunteer attorneys.

Sara was previously Pro Bono Manager and Senior Coordinating Staff Attorney at the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), a large public interest organization in New York City. In her role at NYLAG, Sara managed the agency’s pro bono program and worked to increase immigrant access to justice through strategic pro bono partnerships. Sara supervised NYLAG’s pro bono docket and trained pro bono counsel on complex removal defense and asylum law matters. She built pro bono collaborations with the private bar, developed pro bono-staffed rapid response programs to meet emerging client needs, and oversaw clinics. She also provided direct representation to detained and non-detained children and adults in Immigration Court and before USCIS and the Board of Immigration Appeals.

Sara started her legal career as an Equal Justice Works Fellow in LegalHealth, a medical-legal partnership. As a Fellow, she built two hospital-based legal clinics serving asylum seekers, undocumented survivors of domestic violence and violent crime, and unaccompanied minors. Sara trained doctors and social workers on the hallmarks of humanitarian-based immigration relief and, together with pro bono counsel, advocated for clients’ fair access to state Medicaid coverage during the pendency of their immigration cases.

Before law school, Sara worked as a journalist and producer for the nightly evening news abroad. Sara received her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
